Math Games with Sidewalk Chalk

Take math practice outside this summer! Here's a fun sidewalk chalk math game that reinforces basic math facts for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It's the perfect combination of practice and play! Read on to find out more!

Grab a pack of sidewalk chalk and a black marker, and print out this free 10-sided die PDF file – that's all you're going to need to set up your sidewalk chalk math game!

Setting up the Game

The basic game board will look the same whether you are using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. You will draw ten boxes stacked on top of one another. The picture below shows the boxes filled in with the numbers 1 through 10 for an addition game:

Print out the ten-sided die on a piece of heavy paper, such as card stock. Write a math fact on each side of the die. You should include one math fact for each sum (addition game) on the game board.

Cut out and fold the 10-sided die. Tape the die together. Here's how it will look:

How to Play Sidewalk Chalk Addition

  • Player 1 rolls the die. He says the complete math fact out loud. For example, if he rolls 6 + 1, he will say 6 + 1 = 7. If Player 1 states the fact correctly, he will move to the corresponding space. In our example, he would move to space 7. If he states the fact incorrectly, he loses his turn.

  • Player 2 takes her turn, following the same logic. 

  • The players continue to take turns rolling the die. Players 1 and 2 move up and down the game board with each correct math fact. The higher the number, the closer they are to winning. An incorrect answer lands them back at the start. If a player rolls a math fact that lands him on 10,  he wins the game unless the other player surpasses him with a final roll.

Sidewalk Chalk Multiplication

This game is played the same way as the addition version. The only difference is that you'll want to fill out your printable die with multiplication facts that equal the digits 1 through 10, squared. Hence, your game board will contain the following numbers: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, and 100.

Now you'll follow the same rules outlined in the addition game, except using the multiplication die and game squares!
